Alright, let’s talk about cards that return from exile! It’s a pretty powerful concept in Magic: The Gathering and one that can really turn the tide of a game.

What is Exile?

Before we dive into cards that come back from exile, let’s quickly cover what exile is. It’s a special zone in Magic. Basically, when a card is exiled, it’s removed from the game entirely. It’s not in your graveyard, your hand, the battlefield, or anywhere else. It’s just gone!

But, here’s the catch – a card being exiled doesn’t always mean it’s gone *forever*. Some cards and abilities can bring those exiled cards back into the game.

Why Would You Exile a Card?

Good question! Sometimes you exile cards because you *want* to remove them from the game permanently, like when you use “Path to Exile” or “Oblivion Ring”. These cards are super effective for taking out a troublesome creature or artifact, and exile keeps them off the battlefield for good.

But, there are other times when exile is just a temporary stop for a card. Some cards have abilities that exile something, and then later, you can bring that exiled card back into play.

Returning Cards from Exile: The “Comeback Kids”

Now, let’s talk about the stars of the show: cards that return from exile. This is where things get really interesting.

There are lots of ways cards can return from exile, and they can come back in different ways. Here are some of the most common:

“Flashback” is a common ability on instants and sorceries that let you cast them from your graveyard. But some cards have a twist: They have “Flashback” that allows you to cast them from exile instead of your graveyard. This is a great way to reuse those valuable spells! For example, “Think Twice” and “Cryptic Command”.
“Reanimate” type effects. These effects let you bring a creature card from exile straight onto the battlefield. These can be really powerful if you exile a strong creature with a card like “Path to Exile”. Some examples include “Reanimate”, “Living Death”, and “Animate Dead”.
“Return to Hand” Some cards allow you to return cards from exile to your hand. This lets you play them again, or use them for other purposes. Examples include “Unburial Rites” and “Enlightened Tutor”.
“Return to Battlefield” Some cards allow you to bring cards from exile straight back onto the battlefield. These cards can be very powerful, especially if you exile a card that has a powerful effect or a high mana value. Examples include “Survival of the Fittest” and “Demonic Tutor”.

Different Methods of Returning Cards from Exile

Specific Card Effects: Some cards have abilities that can return specific exiled cards to play, like “Survival of the Fittest” or “Unburial Rites”. These cards are great if you need to bring back a specific card from exile.
General Return Effects: Other cards have abilities that can return *any* exiled card to play, like “Living Death” or “Animate Dead”. These cards can be very versatile, allowing you to bring back any card that’s been exiled.
Abilities on Creatures: Some creatures have abilities that let you return cards from exile. For example, “Eerie Ultimatum” lets you return a creature from exile to the battlefield under your control.
Abilities on Enchantments: Some enchantments have abilities that let you return cards from exile. For example, “Doubling Season”, which can return cards exiled with “Survival of the Fittest”.
Activated Abilities: Some cards have activated abilities that let you return cards from exile. “Sun Titan” can return a creature card from exile to the battlefield under your control, but it costs you a lot of mana.
Triggered Abilities: Some cards have triggered abilities that let you return cards from exile. “Sun Titan” can also return a land card from your graveyard to the battlefield under your control, and you can do that whenever you cast a creature spell.
Static Abilities: Some cards have static abilities that let you return cards from exile. “Archaeomancer” lets you return an instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand whenever you cast a spell.

Building a Deck Around Exile

You can build your entire deck around exile! You can use cards that exile your own cards to gain an advantage or use cards to bring back exiled cards.

Here are some things to keep in mind when building your deck:

Focus on Specific Types of Cards: Choose your cards carefully based on the types of cards you want to bring back from exile. Do you want to bring back big creatures, specific spells, or anything in general?
The Importance of Protection: If you’re using cards that rely on bringing back exiled cards, make sure you have ways to protect those cards, like “Counterspells”, “Protect” effects, or “Hexproof”. You don’t want to lose the card you’re trying to bring back before you can even use it!
Mana Cost: Make sure you have enough mana to cast the cards you need to bring back exiled cards. Some of those cards can be very expensive, and you don’t want to get stuck with cards in exile you can’t play.
Combo Synergies: Look for cards that work well together. Some cards can create combos that make it easier to exile and then return cards.

Strategies for Returning Cards from Exile

Reanimation: A classic strategy is to exile powerful creatures and then bring them back to life with reanimation effects.
Spell Recycling: You can use exile to “recycle” powerful spells, allowing you to use them multiple times in a game.
Exile and Return Combo: Some cards work best when combined with other exile or return effects, creating a powerful combo that can win you the game.
