Cast Off Double Knit Loom: Mastering The Finishing Touch

The Neater Way To Bind Off - Loom Knit Central

What is the point of double knitting?

The wonderful technique of double knitting creates a two-layer fabric with knit stitches on both sides. The finished fabric is completely reversible, lending itself to colorwork, contrasting fibers, or simply a knit-faced fabric that is twice as warm.

Repeat from * all the way around until you are back to the two loops you started on, making sure that that very first Right Peg, becomes the Left Peg of your last set. Then just tie off your yarn.

What is the double knitting technique?

Double knitting allows you to create two layers of fabric at the same time, with only one pair of needles. The right sides of each layer face out, and the wrong sides face each other: stockinette stitch on both sides!

Do you bind off loom knitting?

Binding off is one of the essentials when finishing a project, and choosing the right one can mean the look of pro or newbie. Here is a list and instructions of some basic bind offs for loom knitting (this excludes rake loom knitting). There are many more than what I provide, but these methods I find work best among many I have tried.

How do you bind off a double-knit loom?

Here’s a fabulous, easy bind-off technique for the double-knit loom. First, a quick video and then written instructions (with photos!). Using this technique, keep in mind that when you bind off, you will be creating another row. So if you are counting rows, for instance, 15 rows, you would complete row 14 and then bind off.

Casting Off on a Double Knit Loom: The Final Touch

So, you’ve got your double knit loom all set up, and your project is looking pretty amazing. Now it’s time for the final step – casting off. Don’t worry, it’s not as daunting as it sounds. Casting off on a double knit loom is basically like finishing off a knitting project. It’s how you secure all those lovely loops so your project doesn’t unravel!

Let’s dive into the world of double knit loom casting off. I’ll be guiding you through the process step-by-step, so you can confidently cast off your next creation.

Why Cast Off?

Imagine you’re knitting a scarf. You’ve worked your way to the end, but what happens if you just stop there? Those last few stitches would be loose and your scarf would unravel! Casting off is how you tie those last stitches together to make a neat and secure edge. It’s the same on a double knit loom – we need to cast off to keep our project from unraveling.

Methods for Casting Off on a Double Knit Loom

There are a couple of different methods you can use for casting off on your double knit loom. Let’s explore them!

1. The Classic Cast Off

This method is super straightforward, and it’s probably the one you’ll use most often.

Step 1: Secure the Last Row

Start by working your last row as usual, using your chosen yarn. This will give you a nice finished edge.

Step 2: The First Stitch

Take the yarn from the first peg and pull it over the peg, forming a loop. Now, take the yarn from the second peg and pull it over the first peg, creating a new loop around the first peg.

Step 3: Repeat

Repeat this process, pulling the yarn from each subsequent peg over the previous one, until you’ve reached the end of the row. You’ll essentially be creating a chain of connected loops.

Step 4: Tie It Off

When you get to the last peg, pull the yarn over the last peg and tie it off with a secure knot. Now, your double knit fabric is securely cast off, and you’ve got a tidy finished edge.

2. The Slip Stitch Cast Off

The slip stitch method is great for creating a smoother, more refined edge. It’s a little more involved than the classic method, but definitely worth trying out.

Step 1: Set It Up

Similar to the classic method, start by completing your final row. Now, remove the working yarn from the loom. You’ll need a different yarn (preferably a contrasting color) for the slip stitch method. Thread this new yarn onto your hook.

Step 2: The First Stitch

Take your hook and pick up the first loop on the loom. Now, slip the loop from your hook back onto the loom. You’ve effectively slipped the first stitch!

Step 3: Repeat

Continue this process, slipping each loop from your hook back onto the loom. Make sure you’re always slipping the stitch onto the same peg it was originally on.

Step 4: The Final Stitch

Once you’ve reached the end, slip the last loop off the loom and pull the yarn through the loop to secure it.

Step 5: The Finishing Touch

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail onto your hook, and weave it through the loops on your loom to create a clean finish. Then, tie the tail off with a secure knot.

Casting Off for Different Projects

Now, let’s talk about different projects and how casting off might vary.

1. Garments

For garments, you’ll usually want to use the slip stitch cast off. This method creates a much neater edge, especially around necklines and armholes.

2. Blankets or Scarves

For blankets and scarves, the classic cast off is a great choice. It’s quick and easy, and it gives a clean, finished edge.

FAQs

1. What happens if I don’t cast off?

If you don’t cast off, your double knit project will unravel. Imagine all those hours of work undoing themselves!

2. Can I cast off with the same yarn I used for the project?

Absolutely! You can use the same yarn to cast off. But if you want a more finished look, you can use a contrasting color.

3. Is there a way to cast off without a hook?

You can technically use a knitting needle to cast off, but it’s a bit tricky. A hook is much easier and smoother.

4. Can I cast off on different types of looms?

Yes! The principles of casting off are the same for most looms. Just be sure to adapt your technique for the specific type of loom you’re using.

5. What if I make a mistake during casting off?

Don’t worry, mistakes happen! You can always pull out a few rows and try again. It’s always easier to fix it now than to try and unravel everything later!

6. Can I use a different yarn for the final row?

You can absolutely use a different yarn for the final row! It can add a unique touch to your project.

7. What if I need to change colors during casting off?

If you’re working with multiple colors, simply cut the first yarn and tie it off, and then start the cast off process with the new color.

8. What’s the best way to secure the cast off?

Use a secure knot, like a square knot. This will help to keep your project from unraveling.

9. How can I make my cast off look neater?

Practice makes perfect! With a bit of practice, you’ll be able to cast off smoothly and neatly. Also, try using a slightly thinner yarn for the final row.

10. What if my cast off is too loose?

If your cast off is too loose, you can always go back and tighten it up a bit. Just be careful not to pull too hard, or you could damage your project.

11. What if my cast off is too tight?

If your cast off is too tight, you might need to redo it. Try to relax your tension a bit, and use a slightly thicker yarn.

Conclusion: Casting Off Like a Pro

You’ve now got all the essential knowledge to cast off like a pro on your double knit loom. Remember, the key to successful casting off is practice. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what works best for you. Happy knitting!
