Long-buried family secrets can shock, amuse, or completely change how we see our loved ones. From long-lost relatives to hidden truth, here are some of the juiciest, strangest, and most jaw-dropping confessions that finally saw the light of day.

Story 1:
I am actually the dark family secret. All of my brothers and sister know, but they don’t know that I know. They’ve kept the secret from everyone except one person, and that person told me. My mother had a secret affair that resulted in pregnancy, and my father raised me like I was his own. I sometimes contemplate about whether to tell my sons, but probably won’t.
I actually recalled having met the other father when I was really young, but not since, and not interested in meeting him now. Both of my parents have passed, so I’m not going to make any issues out of it. © Grimacepug / Reddit
Story 2:
I went to meet my girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Her stepdad and I started chatting. He asked about my parents, and I told him where my mom worked. He mentioned he worked there for a few years. He asked for her name, and his face went white when I told him. Turns out, he was the man with whom my mom cheated, and because of whom she left my dad and three kids. Two families were destroyed as a consequence.
I never told my mom that I met him.

Story 3
My sister loved her husband more than anything. He passed away in a freak drowning, and losing him shattered her. She barely spoke for months. Then, one afternoon, she swore she’d seen him in another city. I went with her, certain it was just grief. But what we found there was just as disturbing for me.
The man not only looked exactly like my brother-in-law, but had the same mannerisms. He had a different name though so we sicced a private detective on him, only to find out that he was the man my sister married.
He had multiple wives in multiple cities and when he needed to move on, he just staged his own passing. We dragged him to court, and the proceedings are still on. The good news is that my sister is finally over him. © Jane Smith / Bright Side
Story 4:
When I was 22, I found out that I was adopted when I tried to apply for a loan and needed my birth certificate. My ‘parents’ said they’d lost it, so I spent weeks trying to track a copy down from the government departments, providing name and date of birth, location of birth, etc. I finally got a letter back. The opening line I’ll never forget: “According to our records, you were adopted in 1982.” © Gizmo2k2000 / Reddit

Story 5:
When my Grandfather passed away, we discovered that he did not exist. His name was not in any government registry. He was a normal citizen, paid taxes, had a license and everything.
Lived a long life, married to my grandmother for over 50 years, had multiple children, everything normal. Still to date, no one knows who he really was and why he had a false name. © daveypump / Reddit
Story 6:
My mom hid me from my dad my whole life. She made up a random guy, provided photos of him, and created a story on how he died. Apparently, my dad and my grandmother would find ways to try and contact me, but my mom and my grandma on my mom’s side would shut it down and threaten them if they did.
At 20, my world fell apart when I got a Facebook message from a man saying he was my real dad. He told me the whole story, providing pictures of the two of us together when I was barely a toddler, as well as pictures of him with my mom.
Apparently, they had a falling out, and my mom wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. The whole story
is absolutely heartbreaking, especially for my dad’s mom. She wanted to get to know me so desperately, and only did in the last two years she was alive. My dad and I text once a week, and it’s pretty grand when it happens. © TannerThanUsual / Reddit

Story 7:
I recently learned that before my parents met, my father proposed to another woman who refused him because he was a farmer. My parents have been together since they were 19-20, so I would have never guessed one of them could have had something as serious with someone else before getting together. © TacheErrante / Reddit
Story 8:
A few years before he passed, my dad and I had a long heart-to-heart, at the end of which, he told me he wasn’t the one to first sleep with my mom on their honeymoon. He caught her in bed with her someone, with which she was had been in love for a long time.
Somehow, he forgave and forgot. That worked, until 6 years later, when he caught her again, with the same guy. He told me he wanted to leave with me, but ultimately decided to stay, because he wanted me to have a family.
With all that happened in my childhood, and to him (workaholic, diabetes, heart attack), I wish he’d left and be happy instead. © Bassman1976 / Reddit
Story 9:
My grandma revealed shortly before her death, something like 3-4 days before, that she was a runaway bride. She told my mom and her sisters the story of her leaving town on the day of the wedding when she got cold feet.
No one in my family knew about it until she brought it up.

Story 10
I found out that my dad was having an affair with my fiancée while we were engaged. My other family members knew and never said anything, allowing me to plan a wedding to her.
This happened 20 years ago, and I just found out recently. Luckily, I have a great support system that is helping me get through it right now, but apparently, I don’t have a dad!
