A routine high school track meet took a tragic turn when a confrontation led to the loss of a student, leaving his family and community in mourning.

Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old student, tragically lost his life during a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on the morning of April 2, 2025. Authorities responded to the scene around 10 a.m. following reports of an incident involving two students.

According to Frisco Police, Austin sustained critical injuries, and emergency personnel made every effort to save him, including administering CPR and other medical interventions. Despite their best efforts, he was unable to recover.

Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, shared that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding regarding location. He stated that his son did not know the other student involved in the altercation.

His twin brother, Hunter, was present and attempted to assist him. “They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he d!ed in his brother’s arms,” Jeff said.

Upon receiving the news, Jeff rushed to the stadium. “They said he wasn’t breathing. I saw where the wound was, and we prayed. It’s difficult to understand, but they weren’t able to save him,” he recounted.

Austin was a dedicated student with a 4.0 GPA and was recognized as the MVP of his school’s football team. “He was on the right track,” Jeff shared. “He was loved by many and was a leader.”

Despite the heartbreak, Jeff expressed a sense of forgiveness. “You know what, I already forgive this person. God takes care of things. He will take care of my family.”

Frisco Police confirmed that the other student involved, also 17 years old, has been taken into custody and charged with murd3r. . As of Wednesday, details regarding legal representation had not been disclosed.

In an official statement, the Frisco Police Department expressed condolences: “The Frisco Police Department grieves with all those affected by this devastating loss and extends its deepest sympathies to the victim’s family, students, and staff who are facing unimaginable pain.” Officials added that they are working closely with the Frisco Independent School District to provide continued support.

Following the incident, the 11-5A district championship track meet, which involved more than 100 students from eight schools, was suspended. The stadium was secured, and students were sent back to their campuses. No additional injuries were reported.

As the investigation continues, the Metcalf family has received overwhelming support. A GoFundMe campaign organized by Jeff has raised over $77,000 toward a $140,000 goal, with more than 1,300 donations.

In a heartfelt tribute, Jeff remembered his son as a determined and passionate young man. “He was a bright young man with a great future ahead of him. His smile would light up the room… His commitment, dedication, leadership, and sheer grit set him apart.”

Hunter also spoke publicly about the heartbreaking moment he tried to help his brother. “I tried to get to him as fast as I could,” he told WFAA, recalling the incident. “I looked at my brother, and I tried to help him.”

Austin’s passing has left a lasting impact on his family, peers, and the school community as authorities continue their investigation to understand the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
