The family of 14-year-old Akash Patni was evicted from their home two weeks ago for not being able to pay rent. Since then, they have been sleeping on the sidewalk opposite the small tea shop that the family has been running for many years, according to ABS.
On the afternoon of June 12, while Akash was sleeping on the sidewalk, the Air India Boeing 787-8 crashed into the nearby BJ Medical Dormitory, causing a huge fire. Debris, fuel and fire were scattered throughout the residential area. The boy did not have time to escape.
Akash Patni, the younger brother he once took to school and promised to grow up with in a small house, is now only a body part awaiting DNA testing.
The boy’s mother, Sita, said she was selling water at a shop across the street when she saw her son being engulfed in flames. She suffered severe burns to the right side of her body, but Akash did not survive.
His grandmother, Babiben Patni, sat on the hot concrete floor, desperately repeating: “Please bring my grandson back. I cannot live without him.”
